First German-Chinese Joint Symposium

on Coastal and Ocean Engineering

April 10 to 19, 2002  Rostock, Germany

Background and Topics of the Symposium

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), which is the central organization supporting research projects of German universities, has signed various agreements with Chinese research organizations.  These agreements allow the provision of funding for research visits, performance of research projects and joint symposia and they established an instructive framework for future scientific co-operation activities.

In the field of coastal and ocean engineering, it is the global trend of balancing engineering measures with natural environment and ecological systems.  Respective complex and difficult issues, which arose in many countries and areas worldwide, are similar and borderless.  An international symposium on coastal and ocean engineering is seen as an important step aiming at the contribution of more international research collaborations.

There already exist close links between Chinese and German Universities.  This symposium will be organized by Hohai University at Nanjing, Cheng Kung University at Tainan and University of Rostock from 10 to 19, April 2002 in Rostock.  The intention is to congregate Chinese and German scientists within the field of coastal and ocean engineering, to enable and encourage the direct dialog among them and, hence, to inspire new research ideas and the proposal of new joint research projects.  Topics of the symposium will be as follows:

n          Waves and Wave Climate

n          Coastal and Offshore Structures

n          Environmental Impact Assessment

n          Coastal Zone Management
